Back in 2013, North Shields-based parcel delivery company, Low Cost Parcels, won the North Tyneside Start Up of the Year Award. After enjoying the plaudits associated with the win, the company has gone on to enjoy success and expansion, using the awards win as a solid foundation for growth. Mark McManus, Director of Low Cost Parcels tell us more…

“As a new business back in 2013, we were delighted to be nominated for an award at such an early stage. Back then we were a small team; three full time staff members and a couple of drivers. We were handling around 20-30,000 parcels per year and our fledgling systems were working hard to keep the business running smoothly.

“When we found out we’d won the award for Start Up of the Year, we were delighted. We were working all the hours to grow the business and getting a pat on the back from our local authority was great recognition.”

Since winning the award, Low Cost Parcels has grown in several ways. The team has grown to 70 strong across the country, handles over one million parcels per year, and operates in 25 cities throughout the UK. This year’s financial plan is to exceed a turnover of £4million for the first time.

“Winning the Start Up Award in 2013 was a huge morale boost for the staff,” continues Mark. “It gave us all confidence in the work we were doing and enabled us to drive onwards to reach our business goals every year.”

In recent years, the company has enjoyed a few additions to the offices in North Shields. With a pub in the meeting room, a pool table covered in bright orange felt, a free soup kitchen to keep the staff members going throughout the day, and plans for a gym within the offices, Low Cost Parcels could never be accused of being boring.

The technology behind the business has also come on leaps and bounds since the early days. “As a relatively small player in the parcels industry, we have to keep ahead of the game when it comes to customer service and technologies to help with deliveries and pick up,” Mark continues. “Pick up from the home of individuals (not just businesses), digital receipts, as well as whole journey tracking are some of the projects we’re working on, to ensure the best customer experience.

“The company has a really quirky ethos and we strive to continue that through everything we do on a daily basis. Our head office has evolved over the past couple of years and we now have a hub that we’re proud of. All our team members enjoy visiting head office and we definitely stand out from the crowd.

“Over the years we’ve approached North Tyneside Council for business advice for a number of projects. We’ve always been met with enthusiasm and support for our ideas. We’ve received some funding from the local authority too, which always proved to be invaluable in the growth and progress of the business so we’re extremely grateful for the help and support we’ve received.”
