Chirton Engineering opened its doors in 2003. Based in North Shields, the company provides a bespoke precision engineering service to companies within the subsea, oil and gas, nuclear, automotive and Formula 1 industries.

With an impressive client list, and exporting all over the world, Chirton Engineering is one of the many examples, within North Tyneside, of a forward thinking, successful business. Employing 62 people, Chirton Engineering enjoyed a double success in the North Tyneside Business Awards in 2013, having applied for, and been successful in, the Apprentice Employer of the Year category, then winning the Business of the Year.

Michael Morris is the company’s Business Development Manager: “Winning the double award from the North Tyneside Business Awards definitely started us out on the road to where we are today. Since the company was founded in 2003, we’ve enjoyed continual growth and being taken over by Carr`s PLC in 2014 has resulted in continual investment in the latest equipment and technologies which keeps us at the forefront he explains.

“The application process for the awards that we won was actually quite straight forward and allowed us to highlight our strengths and weaknesses; this enabled us to evaluate our progress within the local business community.”

From the company’s 49,000sqft facility on the Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate, Chirton Engineering has embraced growth and change, resulting in a successful move to becoming a supplier to the nuclear industry as well growing and gaining recognition in other sectors.

“My advice to other North Tyneside-based business would be to seek out opportunities, apply for awards like those offered by the North Tyneside Business Forum, winning is an added bonus but more important is being recognised for the hard work the company has put in to get to where we are said Michael. “In general, believe in what you are doing, set realistic and achievable goals, planning is crucial, and contingencies plans have to be put in place as a backup – don’t be outflanked on any front.”
