Whitley Bay Clinic Has Got the Back of Godfrey Syrett Workforce

Two previous North Tyneside Business Award winners have teamed up to support an ongoing staff wellbeing programme. Godfrey Syrett, one of the borough’s oldest and most successful companies; has joined forces with the Whitley Bay Clinic, a physiotherapy practice which opened its doors only four years ago.

Godfrey Syrett, which has been designing and manufacturing commercial furniture solutions for over 70 years, has enlisted the support of Whitley Bay Clinic to provide physiotherapy services to its 220 staff based in Killingworth and Durham.

The businesses, both at very different stages in their development, met at the North Tyneside Business Awards 2015, where one won their category and the other attended to support a client.

The commercial furniture designer and manufacturer is committed to the welfare of its workforce, and recognised the benefits of offering physiotherapy to its staff – not just for rehabilitation, but also as a proactive, preventative treatment. As part of an ongoing investment in work-based improvements, the company decided to approach Whitley Bay Clinic about offering a regular on-site clinic.

Staff at Godfrey Syrett can now access up to physio sessions free of charge, as part of wider package of welfare benefits which also includes specific staff training to help prevent repetitive strain injuries and other preventative conditions.

Ross Teeley, Health, Safety and Process Improvement Manager at Godfrey Syrett said: “Over the past 18 months we have invested heavily in health improvement across the whole business, and could really see where proactive physio would fit in to our plans going forward.

“We are keen to support our local community wherever possible, and wanted to form a partnership with a local business as opposed to a national player. Having met Lisa and her team at the business awards, we knew she would be a great fit for us, and within weeks of working with her we are already beginning to feel the benefits.”

Clinic director and chartered physiotherapist Lisa Crowther added: “Often people only see a physio when they are in a great deal of pain, but without a doubt the most effective approach is a proactive one and it is great to see a local business taking this on board and it says a lot about their commitment to their staff.

“Businesses are increasingly turning to the support of trained professionals to help them improve the welfare of their staff, not only as a duty of care to their employees but this proactive approach is also proven to yield long term business benefits, particularly in combatting absenteeism.

She added: “I was delighted to win the New Business Award back in 2015 and it certainly helped me to grow the business, but it just goes to show that the benefits of entering such awards can be far more wide reaching and can open doors to a number of business opportunities.”

Godfrey Syrett went on to win the Green Business and Sustainability Award and the coveted Business of the Year in 2016, and have recently been awarded a Gold Award by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). The RoSPA Award scheme recognises achievement in health and safety management systems, considering elements such as leadership and workforce involvement; and further demonstrates Godfrey Syrett’s dedication to continuous improvement in Health and Safety, and the wellbeing of their workforce.

Applications are now open for the 2018 North Tyneside Business Awards and more information can be found at www.northtynesidebusinessawards.co.uk
