Spotlight on Success: Heliguy

Spotlight on Success: Heliguy

UK drone specialists, Heliguy, based on the Orion Business Park in North Shields, were over the moon to win the Retail and Service Provider Award at the 2018 North Tyneside Business Awards.

Founded in 2008, Heliguy started out life in the Northumberland town of Alnwick. But when, in response to the emerging drone market, Heliguy relocated to North Shields in 2014, the business began an evolution process which is still ongoing.

Scott Henderson, Operations Manager at Heliguy, explains a little more about the company and its success.

Tell us a little more about Heliguy

Heliguy is a specialist in drone technology, training, research and development and supply. We work with clients over a range of sectors including energy, media, construction and agriculture.
When we first started out in 2008 we had a modest-sized staff building large remote control helicopters capable of computerised autonomous flight. Since we moved to North Tyneside, the business has evolved and expanded the technical and training teams. We currently employ people across a number of departments including sales, training, research and development, our warehouse and e-commerce.

How did you come to be nominated for the Retail and Service Provider Award?

We put ourselves forward for the award because we’re so proud of the work we do in the business. The North Tyneside Business Awards are an integral part of the community and, as a local business, Heliguy wanted to be a part of this annual celebration of local business and enterprise. The awards help to put North Tyneside and its business community on the map, so it was an honour to be named as a short-listed finalist in the Retail and Service Provider Award category, especially having been whittled down from a huge number of entries.

To win was the icing on the cake, especially as Heliguy was up against some strong competition. It was particularly pleasing that the award recognised the company’s outstanding customer service and passion to develop the drone industry.

What does winning the Award mean to your business?

Winning the award is fantastic for the business. Firstly, it was great recognition for the hard-working and dedicated staff. The award win has also helped to raise Heliguy’s profile and showcase the world of drones, which are being used to benefit many industries and sectors, such as life-saving search and rescue, law enforcement, firefighting and utility inspections.

We were impressed with the competition at the award ceremony and we were humbled and proud when they read out our name as the winner of Retail and Service Provider Award for 2018. Well done to the team for ensuring great customer service and getting the recognition they deserve. Onwards and upwards.

What are your plans for the business?

We are looking to expand into other areas of the industry, including growing research and development, creating products to improve the consumer experience of these systems. We hope to expand all departments of the business to provide more drones to more customers, especially enterprise clients, such as the emergency services.

Another key part of the business strategy is expanding our expertise on drone detection – a particularly important aspect in the wake of the disruption at Gatwick just before Christmas and other such incidences since. Heliguy has already worked with a number of major UK airports in installing and testing our drone-detection solutions, DJI AeroScope, and testing the sites’ existing defences.

What’s the best thing about running a business in North Tyneside?

Being located in North Tyneside has numerous advantages for business. First off, it is a hotbed for technology – building on its proud industrial and maritime heritage and traditions. Secondly, its profile as a business and enterprise destination is growing rapidly, with a wave of recent investment and the establishment of the likes of Cobalt Business Park. People are beginning to put their trust and faith into the area. This is epitomised by the transformation of the A19 – specifically the construction of the triple-decker roundabout – and ever-improving transport links. North Tyneside is also close to major cities, such as Newcastle and Edinburgh, as well as multiple airports serving destinations around the globe.
