Tell us a little more about the business
We are a specialist recreation and leisure centre, based at the rear of The Rising Sun Country Park. We cater for children and young people with complex neurological conditions who need specialist support to develop their social and peer group skills to enable them to grow with increasing independence. We also support their families, siblings and carers with parent group coffee mornings, advice and training. We offer short daily respite during the weekends and holidays with specialist carers and activity programmes designed to develop the children and young people.
What is your motivation for doing what you do?
We were set up in 2012 by a group of parents who were unable to access mainstream provision at civic leisure centres with their children. Neurological conditions are often hidden and the general public not aware of the real reasons behind the presenting behaviours of children with complex conditions. Our founder Lynn had direct experience of her own disabled daughter being rejected from a local play facility. She set about to make a lasting change for families in similar circumstances and with the same needs.
What are your plans for the business?
Since opening the Tim Lamb Centre at The Rising Sun Country Park in 2012, we have grown year on year. We now have over 600 member families, many local schools and clubs using our facilities on an ongoing basis, along with social services and other professionals seeking the right environment for their observations and family meetings. We are also partnering a project with NE Autism for babies and toddlers pre diagnosis who require specialist advice and support too. We need further local business support, as we plan to continue growing to accommodate the ever-increasing numbers of disabled children in North Tyneside. We want to develop support for the older children and young people aged 18 – 25 in a dedicated area/space; develop a sport led outdoor area; develop more training facilities for both parents/carers and sector professionals to share our learning further.
How has North Tyneside Business Forum helped your business?
We have just joined the Forum and look forward to meeting with you all in upcoming events, but meanwhile want to personally invite you all to our Autumn Ball on Saturday October 12th, 7pm at The Grand Hotel, Gosforth Park where we have an amazing evening of entertainment planned.
One thing that makes your business different from the rest
We are parent led and locally focussed in North Tyneside. We want to share our learning and experiences with you all; and likewise learn from you all on how we can grow and develop our organisation further to meet demand.
