Enabling potential in a safe and secure centre

Enabling potential in a safe and secure centre

We love talking to our members about what they do and how they’ve overcome challenges in business. Plus, we also like to find out why they love North Tyneside as a place to do business. We’ve been chatting to The Learning Tree Tuition.

Tell us a little more about the business

We provide maths and English tuition for 6-16 year olds from a centre based environment at Whitley Bay High School, including GCSE’s and SAT’s.

What challenges has the business overcome to become covid-secure?

When we first closed The Learning Tree Tuition on March 17th, we worked really hard to get our students online so that they could still carry on with their tuition and their personalised study programmes virtually.  This gave each student a sense of continuity despite the changing situation around us.

We were not permitted to open by the government until after the school term had finished, as we are classed as an out of school provider (OOS) and we successfully opened our doors for the first time on Monday 3rd August.

We have worked with Whitley Bay High School to get a covid-secure risk assessment that meets all the government requirements, however this risk assessment needs to be adapted to account for the change in situation when the school students are due to return in September and our tuition will move from a morning session during the month of August to after school sessions from September onwards.

How has the business adapted the operation / workplace?

We have had to make a number of covid-secure adjustments, including limiting the number of students who can attend our centre at any one time, in order to maintain social distancing. Therefore, we are currently only working with our existing students during August, however we hope to be able to take on new students from September.

As we are based from Whitley Bay High School, there are a number of covid-secure measures put in by the school that we must adhere to, which includes meeting the parent/carer of  each student at the school entrance gate as parents are not permitted in the school. We have also asked each student to provide their own water to drink and pens/pencils.  Then we have all the usual measures in place, such as appropriate cleaning and sanitisation.

How has North Tyneside Business Forum helped your business?

Keeping me regularly updated about government changes and the financial help available.

One thing that makes your business different from the rest

Every child is different and we produce a personalised study programme for each and every student in order to either bridge the gaps in their knowledge or to stretch and challenge them, depending upon their needs.  Therefore, improving their confidence and enabling them to achieve their potential in a safe and secure  centre based environment.
