I help small businesses with the words

We love talking to members about what they do, why they love North Tyneside as a place to do business. We’ve been chatting to Helen Bowman of In the Detail

Tell us a little bit more about your business

I’m a freelance copywriter, editor and proof reader. Basically, I help small businesses with the words they use to represent their businesses both online and off. I write web copy, regular blog posts, social media content, newsletters, brochure copy, leaflets, email copy – basically anything that requires words, I can help with.

What is your motivation for doing what you do?

My background is in PR and marketing, so I’ve always loved writing. I came home to the north east back in 2006 after working for PR agencies in East Anglia for several years. That was my chance to realise my long-held dream of working for myself, so I started up In The Detail. I love being self-employed and the real bonus is that I’ve been able to be flexible around my small family. Being my own boss enables me to do what I love, while still being able to do the school run and attend school events too.

What are your plans for the business?

More of the same really. I’m working with some fabulous local clients, providing a variety of support and regular work. I love learning about other people’s businesses so taking on a few more regular clients would be fantastic for me. I’m hoping to team up with some other writers and web designers to provide a copywriting arm for their businesses and to support their clients so that’s the aim.

How has North Tyneside Business Forum helped your business? And what’s your favourite thing about doing business in North Tyneside?

I love being a part of the Forum. The business events and networking opportunities are fantastic, and I’ve met some brilliant and helpful people along the way. I love the support that’s on offer simply by engaging with the Forum and its members on Facebook. I’m always recommending membership to other businesses in the area.

Have you worked in collaboration with any other North Tyneside businesses?

Most of my clients are based in the North East and several of them are members of the Forum. I produce regular blogs for two or three of the Forum members and am ghost-writing a book for another member too. All exciting projects!

One thing that makes your business different from the rest

I think my background in PR has helped me to hone my writing skills over the years. It’s meant that I’m more than comfortable writing about just about any subjects and for any audience.

I have also turned my creative outlook into a social media content planning service which enables me to help businesses who are struggling to come up with things to talk about on social media – that’s an area of my business that I really love.
